A team of researchers led by Dr. Dennis Muchangi from Kirinyaga University have developed a portable multipurpose cotton ginning machine. The project initially funded by Government of Kenya through the National Research Fund (NRF) and currently by the French government through FID is set to improve cotton farmers’ earnings. The micro-ginnery separates cotton seeds from lint - ensuring farmers get more money for every kilogram of cotton lint sold to fabric manufacturers. The machine is currently being tested in two Counties, Kirinyaga (Murinduko) and Embu (Kanyuambora) ahead of other cotton-growing areas of Kisumu, Busia, Lamu, Makueni and Meru among others.
The project is also expected to provide training to farmers focused on empowering women and youth through cotton value addition. The research team also including Doctors Muchangi, Kiiru, Mutiso and Kabata are focused on collaborating with fabric
manufacturers like Rivatex, and Thika Textile mills who would provide market for cotton lint.
