Mr. Waweru Nderu (School of Health Sciences) Wins USD 7,000 ISID Grant to Conduct Research into Malaria Diagnosis

The Principal KyU and Deputy Principal, ARSA  congratulate Mr. Waweru  Nderu of School of Health Sciences for winning the International Society for Infectious Disease (ISID) grant to undertake research titled” Analysis of Plasmodium falciparum Histidine Rich protein-2(pphr2) gene diversity in Kenya and its impact on malaria Rapid diagnostic tests(RTDs)”.

This research responds to the fact that conventional diagnostic methods rely on microscopy requiring electricity that is not always available in rural areas. The research if successful would generate vital data that would potentially guide interpretation of negative malaria RDT results which are often overestimated. The research will be undertaken in collaboration with researchers at Malaria unit of the Center for Biotechnology Research and Development at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Nairobi.
